Kilkenny Cycles Bike Shop Time Trial League 2011

“Time trial is a race in which competitors are timed individually on a set distance over a course or track (in French: contre la montre – literally “against the watch”)”. (Source: Britannica encyclopaedia)

Marble City Cyclers are delighted to jointly host this year’s Time Trial league with our friends in Kilkenny Triathlon Club.  The league is kindly supported for the 2nd year by Kilkenny Cycles Bike Shop, Michael Street, Kilkenny.

The format of the TT league has been agreed as follows:

General rules

1.) Entry is only open to current members of Marble City Cyclers and Kilkenny Triathlon Club.
2.) The first TT is on Thursday, 5th May 2011. It will continue every Thursday for another 5 weeks. The last TT will be on 9th June 2011.
3.) There are three routes and each route will be used twice and run in the  following order:

  • 5th May - Kells Road TT (starts near St. Patricks School on the Kells Rd, near the city’s ring road)
  • 12th May - Paulstown TT (starts near the entrance to Cillin Hill)
  • 19th May - Kilmanagh TT (starts near Kilmanagh creamery)
  • 26th May - Kells Road TT
  • 2nd June - Paulstown TT
  • 9th May - Kilmanagh TT

4.) Entry fee will be €10. This is regardless of how many of the 6 TTs a participant participates in.
5.) Time trials will start at 7pm, so sign-on on the night closes at 6.55pm. We ask participants to be there by 6.50pm and 6.45pm on the first night.
6.) Each participant will be required to sign the “sign-on sheet” each night.
7.) The number given to the participant on the first night will remain their number for the remainder of the league - please make a note of it and keep it for the duration of the league.
8.) The league will adopt Triathlon Ireland’s rules in relation to drafting. This is as follows:

  • Bicycle draft zone: the draft zone will be a rectangle. The width will always be 3 metres wide by 10 metres length.
  • An athlete may enter the draft zone of another athlete, but must be seen to be progressing through that zone. A maximum time will be allowed to pass through the zone of another athlete of 15 seconds
  • An athlete is passed when another athlete's front wheel is ahead of theirs. Once overtaken, an athlete must move out of the draft zone of the leading athlete within 5 seconds.
  • 1 minute penalty for drafting.

9.) Participants are also required to enter the league in the spirit of the competition.
10.) The awards night will be social night held on Friday, 10th June. This is likely to be The Left Bank but this is to be confirmed. A representative from Kilkenny Cycles Bike Shop will present the prizes.

Format of TT

1.) Each participant starts individually at intervals. The intervals are normally one minute but this may lessen, depending on the number of participants on the night.
2.) The time recorded and stated by the marshals is final.
3.) The fastest time for each of the three TT routes is taken for each participant. This will allow a participant two “goes” at each TT route (or afford them to miss one night on each route).
4.) Should a participant miss a route twice, they will be awarded the slowest time for that route plus 1 second. This should discourage you to miss a route twice.
5.) The main award/prize will be the Team Award and the follow applies:

  • Each team will have participants of various abilities.
  • This means that all teams should be of similar abilities.
  • The team with the fastest (lowest) accumulated time will be declared the winning team.
  • This will ensure that each participant, regardless of ability, will contribute to their team and are in contention for a prize.
  • Although still to be confirmed, it’s likely that there will be 4 participants on each team.

6.) The following individual awards will also be giving to the participant. This will be based on the fastest accumulated time for each participant on the three TT routes:

  • Male under 40 years (on day of first TT)
  • Male 40 years and over (on day of first TT)
  • Female under 40 years (on day of first TT)
  • Female 40 years and over (on day of first TT)

7.) One other individual award will be given for “Most Improved Participant”. For a participant to be in contention for this award, he/she must have participated in ALL six time trials.
