Time Trial League Week 1 - Kilmanagh

A great turnout of 45 participants took part in the first night of the time trial league in Kilmanagh. The weather was perfect, with no rain on the night (lets hope that continues for the 6 weeks!!).

This year we have been very kindly sponsored by John Dempsey of Lucca Sports, who are a new cycling clothing business, based in Kilkenny. Lucca Sports have kindly donated 2 yellow jerseys for the overall winners in both the male and female categories. Congrats to all that turned out on the first night and to Eoin Molloy and Fiona Cooke who are both leading the male and female categories after week 1. A big thanks to the marshals and timekeepers for their effort too. Next weeks time trial is on the Cillin Hill route.

We would encourage members of all abilities to give the time trial league a go. You can come along and register on any of the 6 nights, with the cost of €10 covering all 6 weeks.

A reminder to all club members that the 2013 time trial league is starting this Thursday evening 2nd May in Kilmanagh, sign on starts from 6.15pm, first rider off at 7.00pm, so please ensure to be there early to get signed up (and warmed up!) on time.

In an effort to help speed up registration on the first night, can we please ask all participants to email their NAME and CLUB (if its not mcc!!) to kilkennytimetrialleague@gmail.com.

This would really help speed up the registration on the first night.

Marble City Cyclers are delighted to jointly host this year’s Time Trial league with our friends in Kilkenny Triathlon Club and Deenside Wheelers.

The first time trial starts Thursday 2nd May and will run for 6 weeks, with each club hosting 2 time trials on the following dates:

• WEEK 1 - Thursday 2nd May - Kilmanagh
• WEEK 2 - Thursday 9th May - Cillin Hill
• WEEK 3 - Thursday 16th May - Castlecomer
• WEEK 4 - Thursday 23rd May - Kilmanagh
• WEEK 5 - Thursday 30th May - Cillin Hill
• WEEK 6 - Thursday 6th June - Castlecomer

This was a superb event last year, with 75 entrants from all three clubs taking part, it really is a great training session for cyclists of all levels, from total beginners right up to very experienced cyclists. Entry fee is €10 (regardless of how many of the TT’s a participant participates in).

• Beginner spins will continue every Monday through the "summer" (...from April through to September)

Club news update - March

Lots of activity happening now that the sportive and race season is well under way again. This weekend there was a great turnout of members at the Gowlin Cycling 40km & 90km sportive in aid of MS. With the weather staying dry for most of the day, all participants were greeted with a well deserved beef stew at the finish line! Well done to all for making it out on the bike on the morning after St. Patrick's weekend!

Next weekend, on Sunday the 24th March the Lap of Laois starts in Portlaoise. There are two routes for this event; 60km and 120km routes, start time 9.30am (sign on from 8.30am) full details can be found here.

Kilkenny Triathlon Club - Duathlon

Congrats to all Marble City Cyclers that competed in the Kilkenny Triathlon Club Duathlon in Kilkenny Castle last Saturday 9th March (Fiona, Ashley, Barry, James & Robert.... I think that was everyone on the day!). A fantastic event, really well organised by the Triathlon club - a big thanks must go to the tri club for putting on a superb event in Kilkenny!

The event started in Kilkenny Castle with a 5k run around the castle grounds, followed by a 20k cycle loop that went out the Waterford road, across to Bennettsbridge and back to the city (where all MCC cyclists should have picked up a nice few places!). The race then finished off with a slightly painful 3k run back around the castle grounds.

Another duathlon takes place again in Kilkenny on March 23rd, so we hope all members will beat their previous time now that they know what running actually is!

Carrick Wheelers Cup

Joe Ryan and Colm Keher made the trip to Carrick this weekend to race in the Carrick Wheelers Cup on St Patrick's Day. A record 279 riders lined out to race on Sunday morning, fantastic to see such great numbers out to race! Well done to both of the guys who finished up in the bunch. A good report on the race here by John Dempsey from Carrick Wheelers. Lots of great shots of the race here on Sticky Bottle and a brilliant read as always from the A4 race winner Barry Meehan of Worldwide Cycles and what he learned as an A4.

WEEKEND SPINS

Our weekend group spins are continuing to grow in popularity, with groups leave from the castle every Saturday and Sunday morning at 10am. Our new steady group leaves from the castle at 10.30am on a Sunday morning. The steady group is a great way to get introduced to cycling within a group, so come along if you are interested, the distance is usually around 40k at about 25km/ph.

About the coach Paddy Doran

Paddy is a Qualified cycling coach and Tutor to cycling coaches He was recently awarded the Coach Of the year award by Cycling Ireland for 2005. He has Represented Ireland as a junior and senior cyclist. He has thirty years experience of coaching at international level. Riders coached by Paddy have won three FBD Milk Ras events which is the leading Irish bicycle race and produced excellent performance in many International events.

He has been director of Coaching for Cycling Ireland / ICF. He was winner of the overall Tutor of the year award in the National Coaching and Training Centre Coach of the Year awards in 2000. He has also helped to prepare three athletes who represented Ireland in the Athens Olympics. Two of these athletes produced Irelands best ever Olympic cycling results.

He is influenced by former East European training methods, and has completed a Cycling-coaching course in the Former East Germany. He has also worked as masseur to amateur and professional cycling teams and World-class athletes from other sports. He currently coaches and acts as a consultant to cyclists and some other endurance athletes.

We have already had some enquiries for new gear and would like to put through an order for club kit as soon as possible, given the delivery times. Many thanks to our sponsors Avonmore, Ormonde Organics and Volvo McCarthy, without their support, this would not be possible. The design and supplier will remain the same as last year. The clothing is good quality, comfortable and importantly it makes you look good! It helps raise club awareness at events to see our jerseys in attendance.

Presentation to Jim Fitzpatrick

At this years AGM the club presented Jim Fitzpatrick with a painting of himself in action at this years Race Around Ireland. Jim finished 2nd Individual overall in a total time of 4 days 19 hours and 38 mins. This was an unbelievable feat of human endurance with Jim more or less cycling the 2,172 kilometre route non stop with just a total of approx 6 hours sleep over the course of the whole week. The painting was done by a local artist from Borris, Co.Carlow called Rachel O'Hara.

Chairman Pat Murray presented the Chairman’s Report for 2012:

General

Membership has steadily been growing to 75 members
There was an increase in the participation of MCC members in cycling events such as sportives, league races in both Waterford and Wexford and in A4 open races.
Fiona Cooke represented Leinster in Olympic TT qualification event and also competed in Rás na mBan.
Jim Fitzpatrick was 2nd in the Race Around Ireland.
Training Day with Ciaran Power for the 2nd year running, went down very well, positive feedback.
Monday evening spins proved to be very popular. Many thanks to John Britton for his effort here.
The Club also ran spinning classes in Spring and has just started winter program, -managed to fill 2 classes.
Time Trial League run jointly between ourselves, Deenside Wheelers and Kilkenny Triathlon Club. Many thanks to Fiona Cooke for the work she put into organising this.
Tour de Kilkenny had another successful year despite the poor weather. Numbers similar to 2011 @ 670 and we raised approx. €9k for Barretstown.
First ever weekend trip to Dungarvan took place in October. 8 members participated and it was a great success. Sincere thanks to Mick Barron for doing support car and photography.
Neil Butler became our first ever A3 racer in 2012.
MCC hosted a highly successful Ras stage finish and start in May. Sincere thanks to all volunteers who helped out.

Tour de Kilkenny

For 2013 funds raised from the Tour de Kilkenny will be split across a number of charities.
Sponsorship Agreement with Glanbia includes agreement to contribute to Barretstown Charity.
Club members will also have the opportunity to nominate other charities.
This will be through a nomination process whereby the committee will select charities based on a number of criteria.
Nomination form circulated at AGM and available on MCC website.
Greater support from club members will be required for 2013 in running the event.
May need to consider making it mandatory for all club members not to take part in cycle and to assist on the days as marshals/assistants.

Cycling Ireland

Fiona Cooke attended the CI AGM and reported on a number of changes to racing rules for 2013. A4 licenses will no longer be available to first time racers. Those intending to race must take out a club competition license first and after completing a minimum of 6 club/league races can then apply for an A4 license. In addition, an amnesty has been introduced for 2013 to allow riders to upgrade by one category. All details on the Cycling Ireland website.

Membership Fee

MCC membership fee to remain at €20 for 2013. Membership being accepted now and Cycling Ireland Licences being issues from 12th November. These are valid until end of 2013. Cycling Ireland Licence fees unchanged for 2013. Membership and Licence form on MCC Website.

Open Forum

Tour de Kilkenny

A debate on the idea of making the Tour de Kilkenny route easier ensued. It was agreed that even though the 110km and 160km routes are difficult, it is part of the allure and should not be changed. As before the challenges of the routes will be clearly outlined to intending participants.

Weekend Away

It was felt that it would be better to have a single route rather than 2 options as per 2012.
